WHAT do I create?
My technical style in any creation I have a hand in is hard to define–blocky shapes, loud noise, fun contrasts, maybe a little too much stylization and a healthy dose of strangeness. Messiness and sketchiness, to my dismay, seems to be a hallmark of my work, giving it the style that is so unique to me. Enveloping myself in my art pushes more emotion into the work; I want to be able to make people feel something, whether that be by the art itself or the underlying story.
WHY do I create?
Creating is something I can imagine myself doing for the rest of my life: pulling something out of nothing and telling stories through ink, paint, and used eraser bits. As a kid growing up I was always interested in art, and I still find half finished comics and clumsily executed doodles in old folders. The people around me were also artists, growing up with artistic family members, taking trips to art galleries, having friends who drew and inspired me to draw. I have my dad to thank for my introduction to gaming, as he sat me down with a controller at a young age. I was put in the perfect mix between creativity and video games, leading to me being on every side of the gaming sphere. I’ve made games. I’m attending RIT for my GDD degree. I’ve captained and started an esports team, worked as a commentator in both HS and college, and currently am secretary of our esports club. Largely, before college, I remained self-taught. Through 10 year old YouTube tutorials and free software, I have pieced together my own games – nothing grand, but I’m proud of them all the same. Beyond making games, when I play them, I’m not a completionist, I don’t aim to get every achievement, I’m not a high scorer, and half the time, I don’t even care if I’m good at the game or not. I’m interested in the gaming world. After finishing a really good game, I’ll dive deep into its culture: the gorgeously rendered fanart, the compelling theorycrafting, the jokes and memes and interactions with people who love the same media as me. I want to delve into what makes a story good, what makes characters compelling, what makes people pump their fists and say “YES!” I want to find the perfect formula to found my own fandom of people who want to absorb my stories. Storytelling through gaming is close to my heart. One day, I want my name up there. I want people worldwide to experience my stories, to geek out as I have done--I want to create something big and have the world take notice.
WHO do I create with?
Short answer--everyone.
Longer answer?
I’m a person of contradictions, meshing theatre with art with video games with sports, bridging communities that may not outwardly appear similar. It started with joining stage crew in middle school, becoming a leader backstage freshman year. I became a member of STEAM club that year as well, which was a bit deviant – mixing theatre kids with machinery never ends well – but generally tracked with my nerdier interests. Sophomore year of high school, bizarrely, I found myself on the basketball team. No one expected this turn, least of all myself, who to this day am not quite sure what possessed me to sign up – and stay – right after complaining about how much I hated running. Somewhere in there, I made time to join the robotics team, charging myself with designing the logos, further bringing art and STEM together. I continued this trend in college-- tacking on working at the radio station, the performing arts center as a greeter, and a social media job as what paid the bills. I also joined drag club and performed in three shows--despite only ever being onstage forcibly for choir in fifth grade. Teams in the workplace are built up of so many different kinds of people. What makes me special is the fact that I DO have my fingers in every pie and I do fantastic at it. I can find something in common with nearly anyone due to everything I’m involved in. While my schedule gets hectic, I wouldn’t change it for the world and I love the ability to gives me to communicate with everyone.
